We typically bring the cows home middle of February to get them settled into their calving pasture.
We noticed we were one short when we brought the cows home to the calving pasture the day before and sure enough here is a first calf heifer with her day old calf still down in the winter pasture.
2019 Came to an end with a much needed new calving barn. The Old Red Barn could tell quite a story. It was built in Homestead and hauled to Rays before he bought the place. On one side was two stalls, a tack room, and stairs to the hay loft. On the other was an open stall with two old stanchions, an open stall to tie a horse and a stall with saddles and tack. We put panels and made it to where we could have five stalls for calving. As we have been calving out so many heifers the past few years the demand for more space was becoming more of a necessity. We start calving the heifers, both commercial and registered, late February.
This is where we calve out our Mother Cows, Its 1600 acres with treed up coulees, and rolling sandhills, Once they come home we feed them a mixed ration with our feed truck. They start calving early March and there is usually snow on the ground and predators close. We expect our cows to get their calves up in harsh conditions and protect them. Every calf is worked at Birth as well as taking Notes on their mother. Calving ease, calf health, structure of calf, vigor of calf, shape and structure of utter, disposition of cow, and anything else we can pick at during this critical time. Birth is one of our most harsh Culling times. We do not tolerate females that can’t function.

Cows will get fed with the mixer truck until we get ready to brand and haul them out to pasture.

The Brandy 15 cow family is one we started out with. Andrew purchased a few Brandy cows from his dad Floyd when he first started with purebred Red Angus. This cow family is hard to default. They stamp their babies with a good heal, good shaped foot, perfect utters from a first calf heifer to a 17 year old cow. They consistently wean off heavy calves that handle stress well and keep growing. We have many females out of this cow family and have kept quite a few bulls out of them as well. A good percentage of our herd will have Brandy genetics.
2715 was sold in 2019. 17 years old and weaned off one of the best heifer calves in the pen. She never missed a calf and they averaged 722# at weaning.
The old J115 cow was sure good to us. We sold her as a bred cow when she was 17 years old with a great utter and perfect foot. She weaned off 15 calves averaging 643#. Be sure to take advantage of genetics out of the Heavenly 11 cow family. We have 8 bred females due to calve this spring. Lot 1 in our 2020 sale is a great grand son of J115. Lot 19 is also out of this cow family. They are hands down a great choice for adding longevity, maternal strength, balance, and pounds at weaning time for any operation.
